You paid for something that never arrived, arrived broken, or wasn't what you were promised — and the company is stonewalling your refund request. Going to court over a small sum makes no sense; the cost and hassle would dwarf what you're owed. This is exactly the trap that leaves most consumers giving up. But you have faster, cheaper options that are built for precisely this kind of dispute. ## Why consumer and e-commerce disputes are different Consumer disputes are high in volume and usually low in value: refunds and returns, product quality problems, delivery failures, marketplace seller-buyer conflicts, and payment or chargeback issues. Individually, each is small. Collectively, they are the largest category of disputes by sheer number — and the category where traditional litigation fails most people, because no one files a civil suit over a delayed parcel or a faulty gadget. That mismatch — high volume, low value, litigation-uneconomic — is why consumer disputes have become the natural home of online dispute resolution. India has built serious infrastructure here: the e-Jagriti portal for consumer complaints, platform-embedded ODR, and online Lok Adalats that have collectively handled tens of millions of cases. ## Which ADR process fits consumer disputes **Online dispute resolution (ODR)** is the natural fit for most consumer and e-commerce disputes. It conducts mediation, conciliation, or arbitration entirely online, at low cost and high speed — ideal for disputes that are too small to justify a court case but still deserve a remedy. Many e-commerce platforms now offer built-in ODR for exactly this reason. **The consumer forum route** under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 provides a dedicated statutory remedy — and the Act expressly provides for mediation of consumer disputes through mediation cells attached to the consumer commissions. ## Is the outcome binding and enforceable? ## Cost and time This is where consumer ADR shines. ODR resolves many disputes within days or a few weeks, at minimal cost. Compare that to a contested consumer forum case, which can take months, or civil litigation, which is simply not worth pursuing for a small sum. The low cost and speed of ODR make it viable to pursue disputes that would otherwise go unremedied entirely. ## How to start **For an e-commerce or marketplace dispute:** check whether the platform offers built-in ODR or a grievance-redressal mechanism — many now do, and it is usually the fastest route. **To file a consumer complaint:** the e-Jagriti portal allows online filing of consumer complaints under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, and the consumer commission can refer the matter to mediation where settlement is possible. **For voluntary mediation:** you can propose mediation directly, including through a remote process if the provider and other party agree. If you are an individual navigating a consumer dispute for the first time, the Individuals audience guide explains what to expect and how to pursue a refund or remedy without a lawyer.

Common questions

A company will not refund me. What should I do first?

Preserve the order, invoice, payment record, delivery record, screenshots, and complaint correspondence. Use the business or marketplace complaint channel, and check the current e-Jagriti process if you wish to pursue a consumer complaint.

Does the Consumer Protection Act allow mediation?

Yes. The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 expressly provides for mediation of consumer disputes through mediation cells attached to consumer forums. A consumer commission can refer a dispute to mediation where there is scope for settlement, and a settlement reached is recorded and given effect by the commission.

What is online dispute resolution?

Online dispute resolution uses digital tools to conduct negotiation, mediation, conciliation, arbitration, or another complaint process without requiring every interaction to occur in person.

How do I assess an ODR provider?

Check the provider's identity, published rules, fee schedule, privacy terms, complaint process, and verifiable track record before sharing documents or paying fees.

What if the seller or platform is outside India?

The available forum and remedy may depend on the transaction terms, the parties' locations, payment method, governing law, and jurisdiction clauses. Check those documents before choosing a process.
